Westgate Oxford

Sector – Retail Signage

Early in 2017, isGroup successfully tendered for a six-month contract worth in excess of £450,000 to work on the Westgate Oxford, a shopping centre in Oxford.

The core of the project involved the manufacture and installation of wayfinding totems and fingerpost signage, each featuring LED Illumination and a specialist metal paint finish.

Project Delivery

isGroup was chosen following its ability to provide CAD manufacturing drawings and full size prototypes of two totems for inspection and sign off before any signage went into full production. This assisted both the designers and the client to fully appreciate the design and size of the totems and agree any changes.

Tailored resource

isGroup provided a qualified and dedicated Project Management team with day to day communication and weekly site visits to ensure it was delivered on time, to budget and to the highest standard, synonymous with isGroup. isGroup’s BSEN1090-2 accreditation reassured the client that the integrity of the structural steelwork was to the very highest standard.

Enlightened Signage

The largest proportion of the contract involved creating eleven, 3 metre high totem signs made up of individual aluminium components, routered and folded to create acute angles. Each totem featured internally illuminated individual lettering, lit side panels and internally illuminated printed glass maps to the face. The finalised signs were then painted with bronze Verometal in batches to retain colour consistency per sign.

isGroup also created four totems that were 2.4 metres in height, manufactured from aluminium were folded, welded and dressed sitting on stainless steel base plates. They featured Illuminated glass side panels with printed optically clear vinyl, illuminated text and glass printed maps to one face.

In addition, four, 3 metre high fingerpost sign was created with aluminium extruded mid- sections painted in Verometal copper, placed on a stainless steel base. Each individual aluminium finger was spray-painted in light bronze Verometal and featured illuminated text.

Furthermore, isGroup also assisted with hoarding graphics, car park signage, back of house signage, the supply and installation of large digitally print banners and hoardings some of which measured to over 10 meters in length.

Times Were Tight

As the project itself was an actual building site, it was not possible to install the signage until the final week, which required an installation team working throughout the weekend. But that wasn’t all, just one day before the big opening, the team worked a 24 hour stint to ensure all the signage was completed to schedule and to allow the shopping centre and its tenants to open on time.

To make the project a success, the management team at isGroup worked closely with Commercial Property Developers Landsec, the client Westgate Oxford Alliance and designers, FRA.
