As part of Barnsley Council’s ambitious town centre regeneration, we were appointed to deliver a bespoke wayfinding solution in collaboration with Henry Boot, Barnsley Council, and design consultants FRA. The project centred around the development and installation of 11 high-specification totem signs, designed to enhance pedestrian navigation, reinforce civic identity, and complement the town’s evolving urban landscape.

FRA had previously delivered the design for Phase 1 of the scheme with another supplier, but was not satisfied with the outcome. For Phase 2, they invited us to tender, confident in our ability to deliver the quality and attention to detail the project demanded.

Material Innovation

The materials used were carefully selected by FRA to reflect the town’s identity and architectural context. We supported this vision by offering a comprehensive sampling process, allowing Barnsley Council to review and approve finishes before production.

  • Brass: Laser-cut and engraved, infilled with text and finished with a protective lacquer to reduce weathering.
  • Stainless Steel: A modern, low-maintenance material known for its durability and corrosion resistance.
  • Limestone Petrarch: Reconstituted stone used for the sides and base of each totem, engraved with a subtle pattern to blend with heritage surroundings.
  • Ceramic Printed Glass: Used to introduce vibrant colours and intricate designs, adding a contemporary artistic element.

These materials were key to achieving the high-end, durable finish FRA envisioned for the scheme.

Design & Consultation

Working closely with FRA and the council, we helped evolve the original wayfinding concept into a fully realised signage scheme that was both functional and visually striking.

Our process included:

  • Initial consultations and concept development.
  • Detailed design proposals and sampling.
  • Collaborative reviews to refine techniques and ensure budget alignment.

This approach allowed stakeholders to preview and test materials and finishes before full-scale production, ensuring confidence in the final outcome.

Fabrication & Build Quality

The structural frames for the totems were fabricated in-house to meet BS EN 1090 Class 2 standards, a certification that ensures compliance with EU regulations for load-bearing steel structures. This qualification demonstrates our commitment to quality, safety, and traceability throughout the build process.

Using our advanced manufacturing capabilities, we ensured:

  • Precision welding and cutting
  • Structural integrity suitable for public realm installations
  • Compliance with wind load and environmental durability requirements

Manufacturing Excellence

All signage was manufactured in-house using state-of-the-art equipment and processes:

  • Press brakes, laser cutters, TIG & MIG welding
  • Wet spray paint booth and direct media printing
  • Accredited suppliers for specialist outsourced components

Our facilities ensured consistent quality, durability, and finish across every element of the scheme.

Project Management

A dedicated project manager oversaw the entire process, ensuring seamless delivery:

  • Gantt charts with key milestones
  • On-site surveys including CAT scanning
  • Regular team meetings and client updates
  • RAMS documentation prior to installation

This structured approach kept the project on track and aligned with council and contractor expectations.

Installation Process

Our experienced installation team, all Streetworks, SMSTS, and SSSTS accredited, carried out the work to the highest safety standards. Key aspects included:

  • Site assessments: Ground conditions, hazards, and environmental factors.
  • Permit coordination with highways and council teams.
  • Foundation design: Three options provided, including reinforced mesh rebar for shallow depth locations.
  • Precision installation: Levelling, anchoring, and finishing.
  • Signature base detailing: Our trademark finish ensures the surrounding materials meet the sign seamlessly.
