The Printworks, Manchester
Innovation, precision and professional project management were required for the recent refurbishment and relocation of the iconic facade of The Printworks in Manchester, one of isGroup’s most technically challenging briefs ever.
“It looks absolutely fantastic. I know a lot of hard work has gone into this, so my thanks go to isGroup for this great result.” – Project Manager, Land Securities
isGroup was invited to produce new tenant logos to sit along the fa̤ade of The Printworks, creating eye-catching signage for well-known brands such as The Hard Rock Café, Chiquito’s, Wagamamas, Prezzo, Harvester, Papa G’s and Tiger Tiger, to name but a few, in a brief that involved:
- In house manufacture of nine tonnes of supporting steelwork
- Bespoke design and manufacture of digital screen cladding
- Installation of flex face boxes advertising corporate brand
- Liaison with Manchester City Council & Transport for Greater Manchester
- City centre out of hours schedule to minimise disruption
- Full arrangement and co-ordination of access equipment
Safe & Effective Installation
The team navigated a series of challenges throughout the project, including adhering to agreements with Manchester City Council requiring the signage facade and LED digital screen to be positioned at a high enough level to allow the 19th century character of the listed building be seen to the full extent of Corporation Street. Great care was taken at planning stage to ensure the finished facade would complement period architecture of The Printworks building.
Working in a busy area of Manchester City Centre to remove the nine tonnes of steelwork that held together the signage facade structure and replace with the new installation at a higher level, meant precise project management was essential to ensure an effective and safe installation.
isGroup worked closely with structural engineers to ensure the building infrastructure was able to support the new steelwork and ran pull tests in preparation for the installation of an impressive 13.4 x 7.7 metre LED digital screen supplied by Ocean Outdoor.
Using its extensive technical knowledge, isGroup was also able to provide a solution for the digital screen’s open framework, as well as assisting with the design and execution of a cladding structure, comprising red composite panels fabricated on-site to additional bracketry.
