Project Description

isGroup was appointed by Cheshire West and Chester Council to manufacture and install a set of customised interpretation signs for Chester’s busy heritage sites, the Roman Gardens and Chester City Walls. As an all-year-round tourist destination, it was important for the team to work closely with leading design consultants, Imagemakers to interpret their concept ideas. In addition as part of this prestigious project, new public realm navigation with mapping was installed in and around the city centre, which involved working with the city archaeologist during the excavations.

Roman Gardens Heritage Signage

The interpretation signs consisted of a large virtual reality lectern, creatively portraying an artists’ impression of the breach in the Roman Gardens boundary wall, during the civil war. It was manufactured with a stainless steel frame with a large printed glass panel for viewing. Informative rear printed anti-glare polycarbonate interpretation panels set in stainless steel frames were installed around the gardens depicting historical events.

isGroup manufactured two three metre high stainless steel totem signs consisting of printed vitreous enamel panels and featuring a St Bees Sandstone base with sand blasted design at either entrance. To complete the heritage interpretation signs, six stone plinths were decorated with oval reverse printed plaques.

Visitors and tourists can now experience The Roman Gardens at its best now its history has been displayed on signage surrounding the site.

Chester City Walls Heritage Trail Signs

For one of Europe’s finest heritage trails, the world-famous Chester City Walls, isGroup manufactured heritage interpretation signs and wayfinding signage. Imagemakers completed concept drawings of the proposed sign designs specifying durable materials lava stone from France and vitreous enamel. The isGroup technical team worked closely with the producers of lava stone and the vitreous enamel to produce the correct artwork and sizes to accommodate the stainless steel framework carriers manufactured by isGroup.

The signage scheme consisted of ground low mounted stainless steel lectern signs and wall mounted signs depicting the heritage illustrations and information onto lava panels at the sited locations. isGroup’s installation team installed all of the signs at strategic points of the ancient city walls, medieval streets and unique rows portraying stories of the walls and towers. The team liaised with the designers to ensure all of the sign installations were acceptable to English Heritage standards.

The result is an informative set of heritage signs in keeping with the City locations.

Chester City Centre Principal Welcome Signs

Located at all major access points to Chester City Centre, isGroup improved the public realm navigation whilst working with Imagemakers on the design concept.

isGroup manufactured and installed six customised ‘Welcome To Chester’ wayfinding monoliths 2.5 metre high to the designers concept. The signs were manufactured from a 10mm grade 316 stainless steel framework with location maps printed onto the vitreous enamel panels inserts and featuring a St Bees Sandstone base with a sandblasted emblem design.

The heritage interpretation signs and wayfinding signage run consistently through Chester city centre, not only navigating visitors but illustrating Chester’s colourful heritage with contemporary designs.
