isGroup has enjoyed working with placemaking consultants Placemarque on a number of projects over recent years. Placemarque work with isGroup because they know that any challenge they present will be embraced by the isGroup team and a solution will be found!
One such occasion was in 2018 when Placemarque were designing temporary solution to enhance the existing wayfinding monoliths across the Oxford Road Campus for Manchester Metropolitan University. Although the signs were to be non-permanent they also needed to provide a solution which would inform a wider Masterplan project.
The brief was that the signage was to be a temporary cost-effective solution, to improve brand awareness of the University and its footprint in the city and increase wayfinding into the campus at key gateway points. It needed to be able to withstand the hustle and bustle of a very busy environment. It was to be in place for several forthcoming events and would eventually be replaced by more permanent signs as the masterplan developed.
isGroup worked with Placemarque to deliver the designed solution to use the existing totem structures but essentially encase them – by manufacturing solid panels and spines manufactured from composite and folded aluminium to produce a new vibrant signage scheme. The panels were made oversized and with open tops to allow removal and reinstatement. UV printed vinyls were applied and face fixings were colour matched. To complete the scheme, gloss anti-graffiti laminate was applied to protect the finish.
The family of totems created a multifunctional gateway and cleverly also facilitated the logo of the University being visible from greater distance on all major routes across the campus.
