isGroup were delighted to receive The Construction Award at the Annual British Sign Awards for IM Groups new regional HQ External Signage yesterday. Now in their seventh year, the awards have become a beacon for the best in British Signmaking, providing a unique showcase for the creative talent, technological skills, engineering abilities and craftsmanship that continue to make sign making in the UK the envy of the world.
Additionally, isGroup were awarded a further 3 certificates of merit and were shortlisted for the prestigious ‘Sign of the Year’ for the IM Group project, the project made the final four for the ‘Sign of the Year’ Award and was also highly commended in the Craftsmanship category. Hatton Garden was highly commended in the Craftsmanship and Architectural categories. isGroup worked with design consultants, f.r.a. on another winning project – Metquarter – which won ‘Wayfinding Sign of the Year’.
The Construction Award – IM Group regional HQ External Signage – recognises the work of the design, engineering and manufacturing specialists whose skills ensure that signs are manufactured and installed to be safe and fit for purpose. Elements also considered are the sign’s design and construction including choice of materials and fixings.
The IM Group signage scheme used a variety of different materials and techniques to deliver the exacting design brief. The cast iron logo was cast from black sand casting in one piece and weighed in at circa 450 kilos meaning it required a bespoke frame for Health and Safety handling. The logo had to be held rigid in the frame both whilst the casting was transported, and whilst Halo Sloan LED lights were fitted to a recess in the rear of the casting to provide illumination. isGroup designed the frame to ensure further uses in the installation phase which allowed for the logo to be suspended by a crane whilst fixing to the huge precast concrete panels during installation and removed when mounted thus reducing the risk of problems at installation. A worthy winner of The Construction Award and rightly highly commended in The Craftsmanship Award.
The Wayfinding Sign of the Year Award is designed to recognise innovative design that fulfils its primary wayfinding function and expresses the character of the brand or delivers added interest.
Following a major refurbishment of the former Victorian Post Office, sitting within Liverpool’s main retail district Met Quarter delivers classic wayfinding in stylish modern finishes in keeping with the sophisticated luxury shopping centre. F.r.a.’s wayfinding and signage scheme used two contrasting materials to reflect the two-sided nature of the building.
